Product Description
Belgium has issued a special 5 Euro coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Georges Lemaitre's death. Georges Lemaitre (1894-1966) was a Belgian priest, astronomer and physics scholar. He devised the theory of expansion of the Universe, (not Hubble!), and discussed this with Albert Einstein. On the face of the coin is an image of Georges Lemaitre with a representation of a part of the Universe. His name Georges Lemaitre is in a semi-circle on the outside of the coin. His birth year (1894) and year of death (1966) are also shown. On the reverse of the coin the value of 5 Euro and the year 2016 are displayed. Furthermore, an exploded map of Europe is surrounded by 12 stars placed randomly. In addition, the country name Belgium is depicted in three languages, Dutch, German and French. It is remarkable that this coin has the new mint mark of the new mint master Ingrid van Herzele.
