2000 years ago Philippi was an important city on the road from Rome to Istanbul, located in ancient Macedonia. The apostle Paul visited this city, was imprisoned there, and wrote his famous letter to the Philippians. In the 14th century Philippi was destroyed by the Ottomans. Since 2016, Philippi is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Greece has issued this special 2 Euro coin and on the coin you can is the Basilica B coloured in accordance with the colours of the present remains of this Basilica. Furthermore, the coloured linear motifs are inspired by a border pattern from an ancient Greek mosaic found at the ruins. The text ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE OF PHILIPPI and GREEK REPUBLIC is printed in the Greek language. Between the text and Basilica B is the year 2017. These texts are coloured according to the Greek national colours of white and blue.
