In the year 1817 the University of Liège was founded by King Willem I with his former Minister of Education Anton Reinhard Falck. To date, the University of Liège is a significant university and has approximately 20,000 students. Originally the University situated in the city on the Maas, but today the faculties are distributed across various buildings. 2017 is the 200th anniversary of the founding of the University of Liège. To commemorate this a special 2 Euro coin has been issued. On the coin is the logo of the University of Liège. On the left side of the logo is the year 1817 and on the right of the logo is the year 2017. Circled around the logo is the French text 200 Ans Université de Liège and in English 200 years University of Liège. At the bottom of the coin are the letters æBEÆ representing Belgium's country name. The coin is packed in a beautiful coincard showing, on the French version, a number of university buildings dating from the time when the University of Liège was founded. Additionally the logos of the University of Liège and the Royal Mint of Belgium are shown. The text æL'Université de Liège fête ses 200 ansÆ and the years 1817 and 2017 are also printed.
