Product Description

The year 1968 was a turbulent year, the "Prague Spring" was brutally crushed, the Vietnam war was raging, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. But there were also nicer things like the song of Toon Hermans û Jan Janssen who was the first Dutchman to win the Tour de France - the Beatles who were at number 1 with Hey Jude, and of course the first episode of the "Fabeltjeskrant" (a Dutch children's television series featuring puppetry and stop motion)! The year 1968 is generally regarded as a turning point in which the old conservative society changed to a more individual and social society with more freedom. Throughout Europe there were student revolts, not only in Paris and Berlin, but also in the town of Leuven in Belgium. In Leuven the argument was mainly between French and Flemish students. The revolts, however, quickly died. In memory of the 1968 student revolt in Leuven, Belgium has issued a special 2 Euro coin. Two students are pictured on the face of the coin - one of the students waves a manifesto and the other student waves a flag. In the background is an image of a Greek Aula. At the top the triangular Fronton is supported by seven columns. The bottom, the stereobate, consists of two layers. On the left side of the coin the year 2018 is shown below which is "BE" the abbreviation of Belgium. At the top of the coin, in Dutch and French, the month of May (Mei - Mai) is printed along with the year 1968. The coin is mounted in a beautiful coincard with the text on the front in French and German. The back of the coincard is mirrored with respect to the front, the text of the back is in Dutch and in English.
