After the February 1917 Revolution the provisional Russian Government issued a decision on autonomy of Estonia on April 12, 1917. The Estonian Provincial Assembly, in Estonian called Maapäev, was formed on June 26, 1917, and was in fact the first step towards an independent republic of Estonia, which became a fact on February 24, 1918. In the year 2017, it was 100 years since the Maapäev was formed and on the exact date 100 years later Estonia issued a special 2 Euro coin. On the coin are oak leaves, acorns, naked oak branches and an oak tree trunk. The winding oak symbolizes the road of Estonia to independence. The bare branches relate to the year 1917 and the leaves symbolize power, performance and life span. These oak leaves can are also in the Coat of Arms of Estonia. On the left side of the coin is the year 1917 and the text Maapäev. On the right side of the coin the country name Eesti (Estonia) and the year 2017 are shown. The coin is heavily silvered.
