Product Description

Since 2006 Germany has issued a special 2 Euro coin of a Bundesland (federal state) annually, depicting an important object of that Bundesland. 2017 sees the turn of the Bundesland Rhineland Pfalz. The face of the coin shows the Porta Nigra (Black Gate) in Trier. In 1946 Rhineland Pfalz became a Bundesland, with approximately 20,000 km2 it is a large state. In area it is half the size of the Netherlands and about 1.5 times as large as Flanders. Rhineland Pfalz is located in the south-east of Germany, has about 4 million inhabitants and the capital is Mainz. On the coin is a coloured image of the Porta Nigra in Trier. This is the best-preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1986. The German coins are struck in five different places, which are indicated by a letter. The letter of the mint where the coin was struck is shown on the left side of the coin at the 9 o'clock position. At the bottom of the coin one sees the letter D for Deutschland (Germany). To the right of the currency, you can see the letters CH for the designer of the coin, the Hamburg artist Frantisek Chocola. The year 2017 is coloured red and the name æRheinland PfalzÆ is coloured black.
