Product Description

This series of four Greek coins from the year 2017 are the only coins that came into circulation in 2017. Especially with the copper 1, 2 and 5 cent coins the chance is almost nil that these will appear in the wallet! Completed with the 10 cent coin, this 2017 Greek mini-set is a nice addition to any collection. The Greek 1, 2 and 5 cent coins have the Greek band with the sea as their theme. On the 1 cent coin an ancient Greek warship, a Trireme is depicted. This type of warship was deployed for the first time about 2,500 years ago. It is a galley type vessel with three banks of oarsmen with one man for each oar! At the time this kind of ship was virtually unbeatable. They were the largest warships in the world! At the top left of the coin the year 2017 is shown while at the bottom of the coin is the number 1 with the word æcentÆ in Greek. On the Greek 2 Cent coin is an image of a Corvette. A Corvette is a warship that was used against the Turks during the Greek independence struggle. A Corvette is a three-master. At the top right of the coin is the year 2017 while at the bottom of the coin is the value indication of 2 cent where the word æcentÆ is written in Greek. A modern tanker is depicted on the Greek 5 cent coin. At the top of the coin is the year 2017 with the value indication of 5 Cent below, where the word æcentÆ is written in Greek. On the Greek 10 cent coin is a portrait of Rigas Fereos. The writer / politician Rigas Fereos (1757 -1798) was, in his time, a champion for the liberation of the Balkans and Greece. He sat between the tensions of Napoleonic France and the Ottomans (Turks). He was arrested by Austria, handed over to the Turks and executed in 1798. He is still revered as a folk hero by the Greeks. On the left side of the coin the year 2017 is shown and on the right side of the coin is the number 10 below which is the Greek word for æcentÆ. In the outer ring of all of the coins are the 12 stars of Europe.
