In 2015 it is 75 years since Spyridon (Spyros) Louis (1873-1940) passed away. Spyros Louis was the first winner of the Modern Olympic Games Marathon, held for the first time in 1896. Spyros Louis was a water bearer who was born in Maroussi, near Athens. The marathon of 1896 had 17 participants, 13 of whom were Greek. After a special race, Spyros Louis won the Marathon and became a national hero.
