Product Description

Nikolaos Gyzis (1842-1901) is considered by many in Greece, but also outside Greece, as the most important painter of the 19th century. He was born on the island of Tinos but soon moved to Athens. In the year 1865 he went to study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He even became a professor at this Academy and also lived most of his life in Greece. His most famous work is Eros and the Painter. At a later age his works became more poetic and realistic with religious influences. In the year 2017 it is 175 years ago that Nikolaos Gyzis was born. To commemorate this Greece has issued a special 5 Euro coin. On the face of the coin Gyzis, at a younger age, is portrayed. Furthermore, his name, Nikolaos Gyzis, along with the years 1842 and 1901 are shown. On the right side of the coin is the year 2017. On the reverse of the coin a painter's palette with a paintbrush is depicted. The Greek coat of arms, beneath which is the value indication of 5 Euro, are shown to the left while the signature of Nikolaos Gyzis is pictured to the right. Very special is that three colours, red, yellow and blue represent the paint on the painter's palette. It is the first time that Greece has issued a coloured 5 Euro coin! The coin is presented in a luxurious package. The issue of this coin is only 4,500 copies.
