Product Description

In 2016 it is 500 years since the famous South Dutch painter Jheronimus Bosch, (modern name Jeroen Bosch), died. Jeroen Bosch was born as Jheronimus of Aachen but later changed his name to Bosch. This is due to his hometown of Den Bosch. The works of Jeroen Bosch are characterized by satirical intricate performances, various of which are still not understood. Many of his works are painted on Baltic Oak. He painted not alone as it has been established that both left and right hand painters have collaborated on his works! However, it is clear that many of his works depict that man himself is responsible for his or her actions. This is visible on this special 5 euro coin. Fragments of four of his famous paintings are depicted in a spiral. These famous works are the Haywain, the Magician, the Garden of Desires and the Last Judgment. In the centre of the coin is an eye that is visible on the reverse of the coin as one of King Willem Alexander eyes. On the face of the coin the value of five Euro and the name Jhero nimus Bosch are shown. The year 1516 being the year of death of Jeroen Bosch is also shown. On the reverse of the coin King Willem Alexander is portrayed as a calm thinking man, depicted as if in a mirror. This special coin is presented in a coincard which is wrapped in a small numbered and signed envelope. The total issue of this First Day of Issue is 3,154 copies.
