Product Description

On April 24 1916 (Easter Monday) the so-called Easter rebellion took place. Ireland was still a part of the United Kingdom and was actually regarded by the English as a subordinate province. The Irish rebelled against this and called for independence on April 24 1916. This uprising was bloodily put down and the 15 leaders were executed. Yet, this insurgency had a major impact on Irish history and the awareness of independence was growing in Ireland. Ireland gained more autonomy and from 1922 to 1949 it was a free State of the United Kingdom. Since 1949 Ireland is an independent Republic. In order to commemorate The Easter Rebellion Ireland has issued a special coin with a nominal value of 15 Euro. On the coin an image of the symbol of the Easter Rebellion is depicted. This is Hibernia a statue found at the top of Dublin's Central Post Office. In addition a part of the 1916 Proclamation is printed. At the bottom of the coin is the value of 15 Euro. The reverse of the Irish special coins are always the same. On the left is the country name Eire (Ireland), in the centre is the Irish Harp and on the right is the year 2016. The coin is presented in a luxury wooden package and is provided with a certificate. This certificate is in the form of a small book describing the Easter Rebellion.
