Product Description

On April 24, 1916 (Easter Monday), the so-called Easter Uprising took place. Ireland was still a part of the United Kingdom and was actually regarded by the English as a subordinate province. The Irish rebelled against this and called for independence on April 24 1916. This uprising was bloodily put down and the 15 leaders were executed. Yet, this insurgency had a major impact on Irish history and the awareness of independence was growing in Ireland. Ireland gained more autonomy and from 1922 to 1949 it was a free State of the United Kingdom. In 1949 Ireland became an independent Republic. Only since 1949 Ireland is an independent Republic. On the coin an image of the symbol of the Easter Rebellion is depicted. This is Hibernia a statue found at the top of Dublin's Central Post Office. At the top of the coin is the name æHiberniaÆ in an ancient Celtic script style. Furthermore, there are several sunÆs rays and the years 1916 and 2016. At the bottom of the coin is the country name Eire (Ireland) and the year 2016. It is the first time Ireland has published a unique special 2 Euro coin. The Irish 2 Euro coins of the years 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2015 were common coins. The quality of the coin is UNC (Uncirculated) and the issue of the coin is 4,500,000 copies. The coin is packaged in a beautiful foldable Coincard. It is the first time that Ireland has issued a Coincard!
