It was 100 years since the first World War took place. Latvia wanted to become an independent country and famous Latvian riflemen fought with the Russians to expel the German occupier for the purpose of achieving a Latvian state. From the 5th to the 11th of January 1917 (according to the Gregorian calendar), the so-called Christmas Battle (of 23-29 December 1916 according to the Russian calendar of the time), took place at Christmas. Under deplorable cold conditions, the Latvians fought this battle. This struggle is considered to be an important step in Latvia's route to becoming an independent country. To commemorate this Latvia has issued a special six-pointed 5 Euro coin. On the face of the coin is the insignia of the Latvian riflemen being a stylized sun crossed diagonally with a sword. There are also eight sunrays. Furthermore the year 2016, the value of 5 Euro and the Latvija (Latvia) country name are shown. The rest of the coin is filled with faces from Latvian riflemen. The reverse of the coin is la rgely filled with snowflakes, on the right side of the coin one sees a bullet-hole! At the bottom of the coin is the text æZiemassvetku KaujasÆ meaning Christmas battle. The coin is presented in a luxury package and is supplied with a certificate.
