Product Description

On February 19, 1817, William III (In French Guillaume III) was born. He was Grand Duke of Luxembourg and King of the Netherlands from March 17, 1849 until he died on November 23, 1890. William III was a special man, sometimes he did not care about anything. When he walked into the palace with muddy shoes he refused to clean it! He was married to Sofie van Wurtemberg. This was not a good marriage. After the death of Sofie, William III married Queen Emma. They had one daughter: Princess Wilhelmina. The Luxembourg constitution stated that only male successors could be Grand Duke. William III only had the later Queen Wilhelmina as successor and since 1890 another branch as the successor of William III has continued. In 2017 it is 200 years since William III was born and to commemorate this Luxembourg has issued a special 2 Euro coin. On the right side of the coin you is an image of William III. This image is coloured according to the original image of William III. The text Guillaume III and the year 1817 are col oured red with a white background. Furthermore, the name Henri and the year 2017 are light blue coloured and together these colours form the national colours of Luxembourg being red, white and light blue. On the left side of the coin is the coloured image of Grand Duke Henri. At the top of the coin is the light blue coloured year 2017, while at the bottom of the coin is the red-coloured text æGrand-Ducs du LuxembourgÆ.
