Product Description

The 2 Euro Malta 2018 has as its theme the Mnajdra Temples. It is the third coin in the series of seven special 2 Euro coins to be issued by Malta from 2016 to 2022. The subject of this series is the Maltese prehistoric monuments. The Mnajdra temples are one of the best preserved megalithic temples in Malta. The temple actually consists of three temples that were built at different times: the northern temple from 3600 BC, the middle around 3150 BC and the southern temple around 2500 BC (nowadays BC is known as BCE - Before Common Era). The shape of the temple resembles a cloverleaf with walls consisting of two parallel walls at a distance of two metres. Some of the megalithic limestone blocks are more than 6 metres high! 500 metres away is the Hagar Qim temple, which is about the same age as the Mnajdra and Ggantija temples, but is a singular temple. The temples are near the sea and from the temples the rock island Filfla is visible. On the coin is an image of the entrance to the Mnajdra Temple. At the top ri ght of the coin the text MNAJDRA TEMPLES is shown, below which are the years 3600 - 2500 BC. At the bottom of the coin is the country name MALTA and the year 2018. In the outer ring of the coin are the 12 stars of Europe. The letter "F" can be seen in the lower star. This indicates that the coin was minted in France. Only 15,000 coins have been struck with the letter F in the bottom star!
