Product Description

In the series of Euro coins with the theme of Portuguese Kings, the theme of the 5 Euro coin of 2017 is Donna Maria Barbara de Braganca (1711-1758). Barbara de Braganca married the later Spanish king Fernando VI in the year 1729. It was a double marriage because the sister of Fernando VI Mariana Vitoria married the brother of Barbara de Braganca. The reason for the double marriage between these Spanish and Portuguese princes and princesses had political reasons as a main objective. It was wished to maintain peace and quiet between Spain and Portugal. According to history Barbara de Braganca was not exactly the most beautiful woman. It is written that Fernando was scared when he first saw her! The marriage was made in a tent that was built on the bridge over the River Guadiana which forms part of the border between the two countries! It became a good marriage in which they could both daily exercise their great love for music. Barbara de Braganca was of brittle health and died in 1758. The couple remained childless. On the face of the coin is an image of Barbara de Braganca. On the left side you can see the value of 5 Euro. Also on the left side is her name D. Maria Barbara de Braganca and the years 1711 and 1758. On the reverse of the coin at the top is the coat of arms of Barbara de Braganca. Below is the tent on the Guadiana bridge. On the left is the Portuguese city name Elvas and the right is the Spanish town name of Badejoz with the text Troca das Princesas. In addition the country name Portugal is seen, in an old font style, and the year 2017.
