The Italian painter Caravaggio, full name Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, was born in the year 1571 in Caravaggio, a small village near Milan. Caravaggio literally owes his name to his birthplace. Caravaggio was orphaned at the age of 11 and was apprenticed to the Italian painter Simone Peterzano. When Caravaggio was 22 years old he left for Rome where he went to work as an apprentice of Cesari. However, his talent was immediately discovered by important clients and he was soon asked to produce paintings for them. He became one of the most influential painters of the late 16th century. From Rome and Naples to Malta and Sicily, he travelled extensively. Caravaggio was born 450 years ago which is why San Marino has issued this commemorative 2 Euro coin.
