Product Description

In the year 1818 a trial run was made in the Austro-Hungarian Empire for the first time with a paddle steamer. This boat, the Carolina, was a wooden boat of 15 metres long with a power of 24hp. She could transport 45 tons. The first voyage was on September 2, 1818 when the Carolina sailed from Vienna to Bratislava. The transport of people by steamer on the Danube was a great success and almost 2 million people were transported each year with no less than 200 Steamers! To commemorate the first steamboat trip on the Danube, Slovakia has issued a special 10 Euro coin. On the face of the coin a number of technical parts of the Carolina, the first Steamer that sailed on the Danube, are depicted. On the left side of the coin is the coat of arms of Slovakia with above that the country name Slovensko (Slovakia). At the bottom of the coin is the year 2018. At the top of the reverse of the coin is an image of Bratislava with its famous castle. Below this is a picture of the Carolina. Above the image of Bratislava, in an arc, is the text "PRVY PARNIK V BRATISLAVE" (The first steamer in Bratislava). On the left side of the coin the year 1818 is shown. At the bottom of the coin is the value indication of 10 Euro. The edge lettering of the coin is "VIEDEN - BRATISLAVA - BUDAPEST"
