Product Description

This theme of this special 20 Euro coin from Slovakia 2017 is Levoca. The ancient city of Levoca is located in the north-east of Slovakia. It has a rich history, destroyed by the Mongols and then rebuilt by the Hapsburgers as Leutschau, a part of Hungary, and now a city in Slovakia. Since 2009 the city of Levoca has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In this city is the Romanesque Saint Jacob church whose wooden altar is the largest of its kind in the world. It's almost 19 meters high! This altar was completed in the year 1517 and to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the altar, Slovakia has issued a special Euro 20 coin. On the face of the coin is an image of Saint Jacob Church together with the city hall of Levoca. Furthermore, the text Pamiatkova Rezervacia Levoca (Cultural Heritage Levoca) is seen. On the reverse of the coin is an image of part of the wooden altar. The year 1517 is printed on the left, and in the centre is the year 2017, with the value of 20 Euro. On the right side of the coin is the Coat of Arms of Slovakia. Printed at the bottom of the coin is Slovensko (Slovakia).
