Product Description

Vatican 2 Euro 2021 Caravaggio UNC. The Vatican has issued their first 2 Euro of 2021 with the theme 'Caravaggio'. The Italian painter Caravaggio (full name Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio) was born in the year 1571 in Caravaggio, a small village near Milan. So Caravaggio literally owes his name to his birthplace. Caravaggio was orphaned at the age of 11 and was apprenticed to the Italian painter Simone Peterzano. When Caravaggio was 22 years old he left for Rome where he started work as a student of Cesari. However, his talent was immediately discovered by important clients, so he was soon asked to produce paintings for them. He became one of the most influential painters of the late 16th century. From Rome and Naples to Malta and Sicily, he travelled everywhere. Caravaggio was born 450 years ago, which is why the Vatican has issued this 2 Euro coin. On the face of this coin is a detail of the painting 'Boy with a basket of fruit', which hangs in Galleria Borghese in Rome. Caravaggio created this painting in 1593 after working as an apprentice in Simone Peterzano's studio. Above this image is the country name CITTA DEL VATICANO (Vatican), whilst the years 1571 - 2021 and his name, Caravaggio, appear at the bottom of the coin. This coin, as described above, in the quality UNC, is packaged in a printed coin holder.
