Product Description

With over 200,000 inhabitants, Rostock is the largest city in the German Bundesland (province) of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Rostock celebrates a double jubilee in the year 2018 and 2019 - namely 800 years of city law and the 600th anniversary of her university. Rostock is a Hanseatic city and was one of the most important Hanseatic cities in the time of the Hanseatic League. Rostock has had city rights since the year 1218 and to celebrate 800 years of city law Germany has issued a special 20 Euro coin. On this beautiful silver coin some typical features of the current Rostock are shown. The city is pictured looking towards the open sea, from which the city owes its history and international fame. The Petrichurch, the Kröpeliner Gate, the Stonegate and the City Hall are depicted. The dynamic lines represent the horizon and the important shipping and trade routes for Rostock. The text æ800 Jahre Hanzestadt RostockÆ is shown in an arc at the lower part of the coin. On the reverse of the coin is the Bundesadler in harmony with the face. At the top the value indication of 20 Euro is shown together with, also in an arc, is the country name Bundesrepublik Deutschland along with the year 2018. The eight stars shown next to the country name are symbolically the abbreviation of 800 years of Rostock. The mint's location is Hamburg, this is indicated with the letter J. The edge of the coin is in Latin and reads "Sit intra te Concordia et Publica Felicitas". This Latin inscription is originally to be found in the Rostocker Stonegate.
