Product Description

This is the sixth coin of the series of Finnish 5 Euro coins that have the theme of Finnish presidents. This coin is part of the celebration of 100 Years Republic of Finland. The sixth Finnish president was Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867-1951). He was originally of German noble descent. Mannerheim began his career in the Russian army where he was regularly promoted. When Finland proclaimed itself as an independent country in 1917, Mannerheim was the highest commander of the Finnish white army. He was a great expert and lover of horses. In addition he spoke at least six languages including Spanish and Portuguese. He wanted to be Finland's first president, but lost to Stahlberg. Disappointed, he retired from politics. However, it remained a messy time and he became the commander of the Finnish army again. After wars against Russia where the Finns fought bravely, Finland had to capitulate and leave large areas like Karelia to Russia. At the age of 77 he became president of Finland in 1944, an office he held u ntil March 4 1946. He had problems with his health and settled in Switzerland where he wrote his memoirs. Although he died in Switzerland he is buried in Finland. In 2004 he was chosen as the greatest Fin of all time. On the face of this bimetallic coin, is an image of Mannerheim. In the outer ring of the coin is his name Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim written in full. In addition is his birth year 1867 and year of death 1951. The reverse of this series of presidential coins is the same. A landscape with a city, seen as from an open book. Furthermore, the country name Suomi (Finnish) and Finland (Swedish) as well as the value of 5 Euro and the year 2017 are shown.
