Product Description

In the year 1841, poet August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the text of Germany's current anthem. The melody was composed in 1797 by Joseph Haydn. Since 1922, the Deutschlandlied is Germany's official anthem. In 2016 it was 175 years since Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote the anthem on the island of Helgoland. Helgoland is a German island that is not part of the EU Customs Area! The text originally consisted of three couplets, but only the third couplet is used as an anthem. On the face of the coin is the text æ175 Jahre DeutschlandliedÆ in a semi-circle, under which, in the centre of the coin, is an image of Hoffmann von Fallersleben. Below the image his name is printed. At the bottom of the coin are the characteristic words Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit (unity and justice and freedom). On the reverse of the coin, the country name of Bundesrepublik Deutschland is displayed in a semicircle corresponding to the face of the coin. Furthermore the famous German Eagle with the 12 stars of Europe below is shown along with the value of 20 Euro and the year 2016. The coin was struck in the Hamburg (J) mint. Around the edge of the coin is the sixth line of the German anthem which is SIND DES GLUECKES UNTERPFAND.
