In 2015 it is 75 years since Spyridon (Spyros) Louis (1873-1940) passed away. Spyros Louis was the first winner of the Modern Olympic Games Marathon, held for the first time in 1896. Spyros Louis was a water bearer who was born in Maroussi, near Athens. The marathon of 1896 had 17 participants, 13 of whom were Greek. After a special race, Spyros Louis won the Marathon and became a national hero. Among other things the Olympic Stadium of Athens is named after him, but streets in various countries also bear his name. To commemorate this 75th anniversary, Greece has issued a special 2 Euro coin. This details of this coin are coloured. Spyridon Louis is portrayed in his traditional clothes.
