Dante Alighieri was born 800 years ago. To commemorate this Italy has issued this coin. Dante, together with Boccaccio and Petrarca, had a great influence on the Cultural Renewal in his time. This led to more Humanism and modern culture. Dante is not only an icon of literature but also very influential on medieval culture. He has masterfully described this in his famous works. Internationally, his works are still seen as the greatest literary masterpieces. On this beautifully coloured coin, Dante is seen reading a book that he holds in his left hand. In the background you can see the Mountain of the Purgatory. The mountain of Purgatory is described in his works and also painted by Michelangelo. Furthermore, the text æDante AlighieriÆ is shown on the coin along with the letters RI (Repubblica Italiana). The years 1215 and 2015 are also shown.
