Product Description

Latvia is issuing a series of special 2 Euro coins highlighting its four provinces. The first was published in 2016 (Vidzeme). In 2017 "Letgallen" and "Kurzeme" will be represented and in the year 2018 the series will be concluded with the province of "Zemgalen". This special 2 Euro coin has the theme of the province of "Letgallen" which is the easternmost province of Latvia and borders on Russia and Belarus. About one third of the Latvian population lives in Letgallen which is also known as the land of the lakes. What is special is that the Reformation did not take place in Letgallen and it is predominantly Catholic. There is a large Russian minority living in Letgallen. On the coin the coat of arms of Letgallen is depicted. On this crest is a lion walking to the right with a sword in its hand. Above the coat of arms is the country name Latvija (Latvia) and under the coat of arms the province name Latgale (Letgallen). On the right side of the coin is the year 2017. The edge lettering of the coin is DIEVS * SV ETI * LATVIJU (God Bless Latvia). The coin is mounted in a beautiful coincard on which the typical colours of Letgallen (light blue) are clearly visible. On the front of the coincard the map of Latvia is displayed with extra emphasis on Letgallen. On the back of the card the technical specification of the coin and the coincard are printed. Remarkably, the coin is minted in Germany, at the Staatliche Münze Baden Württemberg, which is the mint where the German coins with the letter F are struck.
