Product Description

The Letgallen conference took place in the spring of 1917. Letgallen (Latgale) is the most eastern province of Latvia and was separated from their Latvian compatriots in the other provinces for hundreds of years. The key question in 1917 was whether Letgallen would become an independent country or form a Latvian republic with the provinces of Vidzeme and Kurzeme. The forming of a republic was chosen together with the other provinces and the emerging state of Latvia was established in 1918. The Letgallen Congress took place in Rezekne, the capital of Letgallen. At the conference people from all walks of life participated. It is worth mentioning that in Letgallen imagery has never taken place and the province is almost entirely Catholic. Because it borders on Russia there is a large Russian minority in Letgallen. To commemorate Letgallen's Congress, Latvia has issued a special 5 Euro coin. It is a square coin on the face of which the main forces support the congress at the front, they are portrayed as a Catholi c Priest, a gunner, a teacher, and a member of the audience. A banner appears in the colours of the Latvian flag. The value of 5 Euro and the years 1917 and 2017 are also printed. On the reverse of the coin there is a Christian cross with a number of mothers and children singing the famous May songs from Letgallen. In addition the province name Letgallen in Latvian (Latgola) is shown. Uniquely this coin was sold only in Latvia and sold out in no time. The coin is presented in a luxury package and is supplied with a certificate. It is worth mentioning that the currency was struck in Switzerland!
