|Category||Special 2 euro coins|
This special2016 Maltese 2 Euro coin has the theme of the temples of æGgantijaÆ. It is the first coin of a series of seven coins with a historical subject. The Ggantija temples can be found on the island of Gozo. In Malta there are three inhabited islands, the main island of Malta, the smaller island of Gozo and between Malta and Gozo is the still smaller island of Comino. The construction of the Ggantija Temples started more than 5,600 years ago. The word Ggantija comes from Giant. The story was that the temple was built in one day by a giant woman who had to move 5-metre long stones weighing more than 5 tons! On the coin is an image of the Ggantija temples. At the top of the coin is the text Ggantija Temples and the years 3600 - 3200 BC. At the bottom of the coin is the country name of Malta along with the year 2016. The special thing about this coin is that, next to the year 2016, is the mark of the Maltese mint master. Only 30,000 coins have been struck with Malta's mint mark!
