Portugal 2 Euro 2015 Timor

In the year 2015 it is 500 years ago that the Portuguese discovered East Timor. To commemorate this Portugal has issued this special 2 Euro coin. Timor lies in the South East of the Indonesian Archipelago and the Timor Sea separates the south side of Timor with Australia. In 2012 East Timor had just become a truly independent country. On the coin a Portuguese Caravel is depicted along with a typical Ethnographic image of Timor. A Portuguese Caravel was a light sailing boat that was fully deployed around 500 years ago. Two of the three boats that Columbus had with him were Caravels! (The Niña and the Pinta). On the coin are the dates 1515 and 2015 as well as the text Portugal and Timor.
