Product Description

In 1966 the bridge called the æ25th of April BridgeÆ was opened. Originally, the name of this bridge was the Salazar bridge, but after the revolution of 25 April 1974 this immense bridge was renamed the 25th April Bridge. This vast bridge over the Tagus is an important link in the traffic system. The bridge has 6 lanes and there is a railway track on the lower level. The bridge is almost 2.3 kilometres long and the span is more than 1 kilometre. The bridge has the largest span in Europe. The April 25 bridge is even bigger than the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge (which it closely resembles)! Since it was officially opened 50 years ago, Portugal has issued a special 2 Euro coin. On the coin is an image of the 25th April bridge as seen from South to North. At the top right of the coin the name country name Portugal is coloured red. The coloured coat of arms of Portugal is also depicted. The bridge is red in colour according to the original colour of the bridge. The coat of arms of Portugal is coloured in its original colours, where even the blue shields are coloured in detail. At the bottom of the coin you can the text æPonte 25 de AbrilÆ along with the years 1966 and 2016 are shown. The text and the years are coloured in the distinctive Portuguese green colour.
