Product Description

San Marino annually issues a number of separate coins that can be added relatively cheaply to collectors' collections. In the year 2018 three separate coins were issued, the 20 cent 2018, the 50 cent 2018 and the 1 Euro 2018. On the 20 cent coin of San Marino 2018 the three towers of San Marino on top of the mountain Monte Titano are depicted. The first tower is the La Guiata and was built in the 11th century. This building served as a prison until 1970! The second tower is the Cesta also called Fratta. The Cesta was built between 1200 and 1250 and stands at the highest point of San Marino at 756 metres. It is now a museum. The third tower is Il Montale, the smallest of the towers. Built in the 14th century, this was the most strategic tower as a lookout. This also served as a prison. The three towers are shown on the flag of San Marino and on the National Coat of Arms. At the top of the coin is the name of the country, San Marino, along with the year 2018. On the 50 cent coin of 2018 a part of the painting " the Appearance of Saint Martin" is displayed. This painting hangs in the parliament building of San Marino and was painted in 1894 by Emilio Retrosi. The part of the painting where Saint Martin has an open book in his left hand with the Latin text "Relingue vos liberos utroque ab homine" is depicted. These were most likely the last words of Saint Martin (San Marino) which indicated what he wanted to give the people of San Marino: Freedom. On the left side of the coin is the country name San Marino vertically and on the right side of the coin the year 2018 is printed. On the 1 Euro coin the second Tower of San Marino is depicted. The Second Tower of San Marino called Cesta or Fratta was built around 1200/1250 on the remains of an ancient Roman Fort. This fort stood at the highest point of San Marino, Monte Titano, at about 750 metres above sea level. The Adriatic Sea can be clearly seen from the Second Tower. In the year 1925 the tower was restored to its original construction. At the moment the museum of Saint Marino and the Museum of Historical Coats of Arms are housed in the tower. On the coin is an image of the Second Tower of San Marino de Cesta. At the top left of the coin the country name San Marino is shown and on the top right of the coin is the year 2018. In the outer ring of the coins are the 12 stars of Europe. Obviously these coins are legal tender.
