Product Description

History was written on 20th July, 1969. It was the first time that a human set foot on the moon! This is not just a trip to the shops! The journey to the moon is no less than 363,345 kilometres! The circumference of the earth is 40,075 kilometres. It was NASA, the space program of the United States, that made this manned moon landing a reality. The first man to set foot on the moon was Neil Armstrong, the photo was taken by his fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The first rocket that landed on the moon was not from NASA but from the Soviet Union under the name Loena, but this was an unmanned flight. Only Americans have ever set foot on the moon, a total of 12 people! The designer of these rockets is rocket scientist Werner von Braun, who developed the V2 rockets in the 2nd World War, but luckily this development took too long. It has been 50 years since men first stood on the moon, and that is why Belgium has decided to issue a special 5 Euro coin. On the face of the coin a father and son are depicted watching live television as Neil Armstrong is the first person to ever set foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong uttered his famous sentence "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind." The date (in English) JULY-21 and the year 1969 are also displayed. On the left printed in an arc is the text 'FIRST MAN ON THE MOON'. The reverse of the coin shows the map of Europe and the country name of Belgium is written in its three official languages 'BELGIEN-BELGIQUE-BELGIE' (German, French and Dutch). The 12 stars of Europe and the value indication of 5 Euro with the year of issue, 2019, are also displayed. The quality of the coin is Silver (Ag) Proof and the coin is presented in luxury packaging. The coin is supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
