Product Description

Perhaps the most famous border that Europe has known was The Berlin Wall. It was more than 45 kilometres long and separated West and East Berlin. When the Second World War ended Berlin was divided into four occupation zones. Russia was given control of one of these zones, the other countries that were allocated a part were France, Britain and the United States. West Berlin wanted to introduce a new currency, the Deutsche Mark. The currency was introduced to prevent a new wave of inflation and to stop the black trade. Russia absolutely did not agree with this and saw it as a threat. It was decided to build the wall to protect the border and the currency. To commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall Germany and France decided to jointly issue a special 2 Euro coin. On the face of these coloured 2 Euro coins the first demolished part of the wall, from which doves of peace fly into the free world, is depicted. At the top of the coin is a person standing, full of joy, in front of the Brandenburg Gate, with hands in the air. On the left side of the coloured coins is the text '30 Jahre Mauerfall' (30 Years Fall of the Berlin Wall). This series of coins consists of the coins from the five German mints, each indicated by a different letter - A, D, F, G and J. These coloured coins are each packed in a coin capsule.
