Product Description

Andréas Kálvos, (1792-1869) is one of the most important modern Greek poets. Andréas Kálvos came from a reasonably prosperous family and, at a young age, went to Florence, Italy to study. Andréas Kálvos left Italy for France, but spent most of his life in London. Andréas Kálvos had a unique way of poetry and used a language, the katharevousa, that could only be written by a select group of people. He combined different styles and made his own style. The way that his works are constructed is considered unique because nobody imitated him. His works became known when Kostis Palamas came across his poems and made them known to the general public. To commemorate the fact that Andréas Kálvos died 150 years ago, Greece decided to issue a 2 Euro coin with him as the subject. This coloured 2 Euro coin shows Andréas Kálvos around the age of 65. His name is also displayed on the left, in Greek. At the top left are the dates 1792-1869 and on the right side of the coin is the Greek text 'Greece Democracy'. This coloured 2 Euro coin is packed in a coin capsule.
