Product Description
Sutartines is on the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, indicating that the Sutartines has UNESCO status. Sutartines is a wonderful example of the music styles that were practiced around 1500-1600 (during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance) but only later, around 1700-1800, let their true splendour shine. The Sutartines are simple folk songs and consist of two to five pitches with the melodies consisting of two identical pieces. Sutartines are sung exclusively by the women with wooden wind instruments being played by the men. Today, the Sutartines are a phenomenon that can only be continued in the north-western part of Lithuania. During the Sutartines, both men and women wear special clothing that is characteristic of clothing from the Middle Ages. While singing, people turn in a circle, sometimes hand in hand. This coloured 2 Euro coin fictionally depicts these Sutartines. The coin shows linear motifs that symbolize the (Polyphonic) melodies of Sutartines. The lines become wider and narrower and, as it were, turn around just like the performers during the Sutartines. Different miniature figures are displayed on the coin. In the centre of the coin a cheerfully singing woman is shown. Furthermore, the country name 'LIETUVA' (Lithuania), the word 'Sutartines' and the year 2019 are displayed. This coloured 2 Euro coin is packed in a coin capsule.
