Product Description

This coloured 2 Euro Malta 2018 has as its theme the Mnajdra Temples. It is the third coin in the series of seven special 2 Euro coins issued by Malta from 2016 to 2022. The subject of this series is the Maltese prehistoric monuments. The Mnajdra temples are one of the best preserved megalithic temples in Malta. The temple actually consists of three temples that were built at different times: the northern temple from 3600 BC (now known as BCE û before the common era), the middle around 3150 BC and the southern temple around 2500 BC. The shape of the temple resembles a cloverleaf consisting of two parallel walls at a distance of two metres apart. Some of the megalithic limestone blocks are more than 6 metres high! 500 metres away is the Hagar Qim temple, which is about the same age as the Mnajdra and Ggantija temples, but is a singular temple. The temples are near the sea and the rock island Filfla is visible from them. The coin depicts the coloured image of the entrance to the Mnajdra Temple. At the top right of the coin is the text MNAJDRA TEMPLES with the years 3600 - 2500 BC below. These are coloured red. At the bottom of the coin, the country name MALTA and the year 2018 are coloured white. The white and red colours are the national colours of Malta. The coin is packaged in a plastic coin capsule.
