Product Description

The Vatican officially became an independent state on 11th February 1929. The treaty for this was signed by the Laterans and the Concordat. In the Lateran Treaty the Mussolini government recognized the Vatican City as an independent state, and the Concordat arranged for Catholicism to be given a special status in Italy. This actually meant the end of a bloody battle that had raged for years. For centuries the ecclesiastical state owned almost the whole of central Italy! The popes used to have an enormous amount of military power and had entire armies that fought for the faith to expand and defend their territory. On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Vatican it was decided to issue a special 2 Euro coin. This coloured 2 Euro coin shows Pope Pius XI, this Pope is seen as the first official Pope of the Vatican. Pope Pius XI was crowned on 6th February, 1922 and signed the treaty on 11th February, 1929. On this coloured 2 Euro coin, Pope Pius XI is shown looking to the left. In the background of the coin the palace, the St. John of the Laterans is depicted together with the characteristic obelisk. The text ôSTATO DELLA CITTA DEL VATICANOö s urrounds the image. The years 1929 and 2019 are shown at the bottom of the coin. This coloured 2 Euro coin is packaged in a coin capsule.
