Product Description

Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II, was born on 18th May, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. On 16th October, 1978 he was proclaimed the 264th Pope and ruled the Catholic Church until his death on 2nd April, 2005. Pope John was a very devoted man and spoke no fewer than 11 languages! He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on 1st May, 2011 and canonized by Pope Francis on 27th April, 2014. He was the first Polish Pope to rule the Catholic Church and was much loved. On the face of this coloured 2 Euro coin, Pope John Paul II is depicted next to the Cathedral of Wadowice, where he was baptized and the house where he was born. The eight-pointed star refers to the Virgin Mary, to whom Pope John Paul II was devoted and dedicated his pontificate to. His name (PAPA GIOVANNI PAOLO II) is displayed in an arc at the top left. On the right is his year of birth, 1920, next to which is the current year, 2020. At the bottom of the coin is the country name 'CITTA DEL VATICANO' (Vatican). This coloured 2 Euro is packed in a coin capsule.
