Andorra 2 Euro 2021 'Our Lady of Meritxell'

Andorra 2 Euro 2021 'Our Lady of Meritxell' (Mare de Deu de Meritxell). 'Our Lady of Meritxell' is an Andorran statuette representing the Virgin Mary. The statuette was Canonically Crowned by Pope Benedict XV on 8th September, 1921. This is a solemn Coronation where the Pope bestows a crown on a statue of Mary that is widely used. The original figurine dates back to the 12th century! However, the chapel in which the statue was located burned down on 8th September, 1972. A replica of the statue can be found in the new basilica of Meritxell. To commemorate the fact that Pope Benedict XV crowned the statue Canonically a hundred years ago, Andorra has decided to issue a special 2 Euro coin with this as its subject. On the face of this coin is an image of the statue 'Our Lady of Meritxell'. In the background the interior of the Chapel, in which this statue is located, is represented. Furthermore, the years 1921 and 2021 are shown along with the country name, Andorra. The coin is mounted in the standard Andorran Coincard, of which the circulation is 70,000 copies.
