Product Description

Christoffel Plantijn was a book printer and publisher who was born in France and worked in Antwerp. When Christoffel Plantijn turned 31, he decided to move with his family to Antwerp which, at the time, was one of the larger cities in Europe. In the year 1555 he opened his print works 'Plantijn' and within 20 years became the largest printing and publishing house in the world. During his peak period he had no fewer than 82 employees and 22 printing presses were working day and night. Christoffel Plantijn was born 500 years ago which is why Belgium has decided to issue a 10 Euro coin with him as its subject. On the face of the coin Christoffel Plantijn is depicted with one of his printing presses. His name 'Christoffel Plantijn' and the years 1520 and 2020 are shown at the top of the coin. On the right is the text 'Labore et Constantia' (Energy and Perseverance). On the reverse of the coin is the map of the European Union. Furthermore, the coin shows the country name Belgium in its three languages - Belgie, Belgique and Belgien (Dutch, French and German). The 12 European stars, six at the bottom and six at the top, the value indication of 10 Euro and the year 2020 are also shown. Furthermore, the mint master's mark and the mint mark are displayed. The coin is presented in a beautiful case and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
