Product Description

On 10th May 1940, the Germans attacked their neighbour Belgium. Early in the morning there were heavy bombings and several strategic sites were destroyed. Within 18 days the Belgians surrendered to the Germans. After this eighteen-day campaign a curfew was instituted in Belgium and all radios were confiscated. It was a difficult time for the Belgians where survival was the only bright spot. Food was very scarce and could only be bought with special stamps. The Red Cross and the Flemish Cross were the most important aid workers who could give that little bit extra to the Belgian population. In September 1944, the Allied troops entered Belgium's southern border. From January 1945 the Belgian population were able to live in freedom again. The Royal Belgian Mint has issued a 2.5 Euro coin in memory of this dark time with the theme '75 years of Freedom and Peace in Europe'. On the obverse of the coin is an enlarged number 75, within which olive branches and doves of peace have been incorporated. The text 'PEACE AND FREEDOM IN EUROPE' is shown in an arc to the top and right of the coin. The year of issue, 2020, is shown at the bottom of the coin. This coin, as described above, is mounted in a beautiful coincard. The Dutch version of the Coincard can be recognized by the text that is displayed on the front in both Dutch and English.
