Product Description

The year 1968 was a turbulent year, the Prague spring was brutally crushed, the Vietnam war was raging, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated. But there were also nicer things like the song of Toon Hermans, Jan Janssen became the first Dutchman to win the Tour de France, the Beatles were at number 1 with Hey Jude and of course the first episode of the Fabeltjeskrant (a children's TV programme)! The year 1968 is generally regarded as a turning point in which the old conservative society changed to a more individual and social society with more freedom. Throughout Europe there were student revolts, including in Paris and Berlin, and in Leuven in Belgium. In Leuven the argument was mainly between French and Flemish students. The revolts, however, quickly died. In memory of the 1968 student revolt in Leuven, Belgium has issued a special 2 Euro coin. Two students are pictured on the face of this coloured 2 Euro coin. One student waves a manifesto and the other student waves a red flag. In the background is an image of a Greek Aula. At the top is the triangular Fronton supported by seven columns below. The soil, the stereobate, consists of two layers. On the left side of the coin the year 2018 is coloured red with the abbreviation of Belgium "BE" coloured yellow. At the top of the coin the month of May, in Dutch and French (Mei - Mai), is coloured red and yellow, with the year 1968 coloured black. These colours together form the national colours of Belgium being Black, Yellow and Red. The coin is packaged in a plastic coin capsule.
