The first Belgian train ride was also the first European train ride. This first European train ride took place on 5th May, 1835 between Brussels and Mechelen. The first train to complete this journey was the Steam Locomotive called 'The Arrow'. The route consisted of 22 kilometres during which it was stopped once. The trains ran no less than five times faster than the original carriages! The steam locomotive 'The Arrow' is depicted on the face of the coin. Additionally, the map of Belgium, with the route between Mechelen and Brussels, shown on it. The year 1835 and the year of issue, 2020, are also shown. The text 'First train on European Mainland' is also displayed. On the reverse of the coin is the map of the European Union. Furthermore, the country name of Belgium is shown in its three official languages - Belgie, Belgique and Belgien (Dutch, French and German).
