Johann Voldemar Jannsen was a writer, a poet, a journalist and an official translator who mastered seven languages! Johann Voldemar Jannsen wrote the song 'Mu isamaa, mu õnn ja rõõm' (My homeland, my pride and joy), which today is the Estonian national anthem! The first Estonian Singing Party was held in 1869 at the initiative of Johann Voldemar Jannsen. At that time most of the songs were performed in German as this was the language of the Elite at the time. The Estonian Song Festival is still one of the most important cultural activities in Estonia. Johann Voldemar Jannsen is seen as a founder of Estonian history.
