Estonia 2 Euro 2019 "University of Tartu"

The University of Tartu (Tartu Ülikool) is not only the oldest but also the largest university in Estonia. Tartu has 93,983 inhabitants and is the largest city in Estonia after Tallinn. The University of Tartu was founded in 1632 but was closed for many years because of the many wars that Estonia experienced. Since 1802 the university has once again been open. After the end of the First World War Estonia became independent. The University of Tartu became the National University in 1919, from this time the language of instruction at the university became Estonian. The university has 9 faculties with the Faculty of Economics being highly regarded. Of the world's best 500 universities the University of Tartu is in position 301. It is the only university of the Baltic States that is among the top 500. There are no fewer than 18,000 students at Tartu University! The face of the coin shows the main building of the university. The number 100 commemorates that the official university language has been Estonian for 100 years. Above the number 100 is the Estonian text 'Rahvusülikool' (national university) whilst at the bottom of the coin is the Estonian text 'Universital Tartuensis' (Tartu university) . The year of incorporation, 1632, is shown below this text whilst the year of issue, 2019, is shown on the right of the coin. To the left is the country name 'Eesti' (Estonia).
