Estonia 2 Euro 2020 Discovery Antarctica

It is 200 years since the discovery of Antartica. Fabian Gottlieb van Bellingshausen was the leader of the second expedition that sailed around Antarctica. Antarctica is about 14 million square kilometres larger than Europe and Australia. The continent is completely covered in ice and snow, and there are no towns or villages. There are about 5,000 people living on Antarctica all located in research stations. In the winter the temperatures range between -30 and -50 degrees Celsius and in the summer months the mercury can reach as high as -15 to +5 degrees! The average ice sheet is 2150 meters deep. The highest point is Mount Vinson which stands at a height of 4,891 metres. On the face of the coin the ship that Fabian Gottlieb van Bellingshausen used to reach Antarctica is depicted, above which is the name of the explorer 'Fabian Gottlieb van Bellingshausen'.
