Product Description

It has been 200 years since Antarctica (the South Pole) was first discovered. Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was the leader of the second expedition sailing around Antarctica. Antarctica is more than 14 million square-kilometres larger than Europe and Australia. The continent is completely covered with ice and snow and has no cities or villages. As many as 5,000 people live in Antarctica, all located in research stations. In winter the temperature is between -30 and -50 degrees Celsius and in the summer months the mercury can be between -15 and + 5 degrees Celsius. The average ice cap is 2150 metres thick. The highest point in Antarctica (Mount Vinson) is no less than 4,891 metres high! On the face of this coloured 2 Euro coin the ship in which Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen reached Antarctica is depicted. At the top of the coin the name of this explorer 'Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen' is printed in an arc. To the right of the coin is the country name 'EESTI' (Estonia) and the year of issue, 2020. At the bottom of the coin is the text 'ANTARKTIKA' (Antarctica) and the number '200'. This coloured 2 Euro coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
