Product Description

Hanseatic Viljandi (Hanseatic city of Viljandi) is a city and municipality located in the southern part of Estonia, in the province of Viljandimaa. Viljandi is the capital of the province of Viljandimaa. The first time the city was officially mentioned was in the year 1154. In the year 1211, the fortress that was built and settled by Estonians in Viljandi was stormed by the 'Order of the Brothers of the Sword'. (The Livonian Brothers of the Sword was a Catholic military order established by Albert, the third bishop of Riga, in 1202). Twelve years later, in 1223, the castle was finally captured! Viljandi received city rights in 1283 and is one of the oldest cities in Estonia. Viljandi was a Hanseatic city - a Hanseatic city belonged to the Hanseatic League which was an alliance between German and Northern European trading cities between the 13th and 18th centuries. Nearly 200 cities joined the Hanseatic League to protect and trade their goods. In Viljandi most of this trade was with grain, fish and candles. On the face of the coin is an image that symbolizes grain, fish and candles. The city name Viljandi and the value indication of 8 Euro are also displayed. The reverse of the coin shows the text 'EESTI VABARIIK' (Republic of Estonia) together with the coat of arms of Estonia. The year 2019 is also displayed. The coin is presented in a beautiful box and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The circulation of this coin is only 4,000 pieces.
