2021 Finland 20 Euro coin 'Aland'. It has been 100 years since 'Aland' became an autonomous area within the Republic of Finland. Aland is a Finnish region consisting of 26,000 islands of which about 70 are inhabited. With an area of 13,340 square kilometres, only a small part borders on the mainland! When Finland became independent in 1917 Finland subsequently claimed the Aland area. The League of Nations finally decided that, while more than 95% of the inhabitants indicated that they wanted to belong to Sweden, Aland remained Finnish territory. However, the Swedish culture had to be guaranteed. Among other things Aland has its own National Anthem, its own flag, its own license plate and its own police unit. Aland has 1 deputy in the Finnish parliament and therefore also has a small say in Finnish politics. The face of the coin shows a part of the Baltic Sea, a boat and a compass.
