Product Description

Each year since 2006 Germany has been issuing a special 2 Euro coin with the theme of a Bundesland (state). The coin depicts an important object of that Bundesland. In the year 2020 it is the turn of the large 'Sanssouci Castle'. Sanssouci Castle is one of the most famous palaces in the German state of Brandenburg. Frederick the Great began construction of this palace in 1745. Castle Sanssouci was expanded with two side wings in 1840, this was commissioned by Frederick William IV of Prussia. Sanssouci Castle is built on a plot of no less than 290 hectares! Charlottenhof Castle and Orangery Palace can also be found in this park in addition to Sanssouci Castle. Many other striking buildings can also be found here, such as the Bildergalerei, the Chinesisches Haus and the Freundschaft Temple. On exiting Sanssouci Castle the stairs lead down to a giant fountain surrounded by the 12 Greek Gods. The façade of Sanssouci Castle is depicted on the face of the coin. Below this image is the name 'Brandenburg' with the letter 'D' under this. This letter 'D' indicates the country name Deutschland (Germany). At the top of the coin is the year of issue, 2020. To the right of the year a letter, which indicates the mint where the coin was struck, is shown. German coins are struck in one of five different mints which are represented by a letter - A = Berlin, D = Munich, F = Stuttgart, G = Karlsruhe and J = Hamburg. This coin is packed in a printed coin holder.
